How BTC is Transforming Mental Health Ed for Nursing Students
Posted on November 28, 2023
In the ever-evolving journey of healthcare education, nursing programs are continuously being innovated to meet the needs of the next generation of nurses. Tasha Detloff, MSN, RN, RN Program Coordinator at Bolivar Technical College (BTC), and Lucinda Schmidt, MSN, RN, Coordinator for Simulation and Skills at BTC, recently shed light on a cutting-edge initiative at BTC that is revolutionizing mental health education in nursing.
Hearing Voices Simulation: Fostering Empathy
Step into the classrooms at BTC, where creativity takes center stage in mental health education. The mental health simulations at BTC transcend the boundaries of traditional teaching methods. In line with BTC’s commitment to student-centric education, a simulation day unfolded, immersing students in the world of hearing voices experienced by individuals with schizophrenia. Wearing headphones playing an audio file simulating the voices that someone with schizophrenia might hear, students embarked on tasks like medication math worksheets and meal planning, all while contending with negative internal voices.
The feedback received from students was unequivocal—many found the experience intense, with some expressing a newfound empathy for those grappling with mental health struggles. This immersive activity not only resonated with their academic pursuits but also aligned seamlessly with their innate desire to understand and make a positive impact on the world around them.
Schmidt stated, “One student said they were able to really see the patient as a person, not just the diagnosis.”
Mental Health Simulations: Engaging Creativity
As revealed in our recent conversation, students engaged in a groundbreaking mental health simulation during the fall 2023 semester. In this innovative exercise, students collaborated in groups to create patient scenarios for simulated experiences, introducing an element of creativity seldom seen in traditional classrooms.
Choosing a mental health disorder, students went beyond textbook learning and scripted the signs, symptoms, and backstory of their patient. What sets this exercise apart is the dynamic twist—while one student from each group brought the patient to life through portrayal, another group had to provide care with no prior knowledge. This not only tested their critical thinking skills, but also tapped into the modern student’s preference for hands-on, interactive learning.
As Detloff highlighted, the emotional intensity reached unexpected heights when one student’s portrayal brought another to tears. This authentic reaction showcased the profound impact of this innovative approach on emotional engagement and understanding.
In conclusion, BTC’s commitment to redefining mental health education goes beyond the traditional confines of academic learning. Through creative simulations like the ones highlighted, BTC’s nursing programs not only equip students with technical skills, but also fosters empathy and a profound understanding of the human side of healthcare. As the healthcare education landscape continues to evolve, these innovative approaches resonate with today’s students, preparing them to make a lasting impact in the world of nursing.
